While chickens don’t have nearly the vocabulary that us humans have, and their chicken brains don’t allow for abstract and deep conversations, they are still a very vocal and conversational critter. It leads to more success if you learn to speak the fowl language of the turkey.Researchers have shown that there are at least 24 different sounds chickens make and maybe as many as 30. This year listen to the birds in the woods and copy them. Turkeys do not know what a routine is and do not talk like the contest judge wants to hear. Caller do not seem to want to do the same. Once you learn to call with your jaw dropped you begin to get realism in your calling.īirds in the woods yelp just one time. People are reluctant to pen the mouth for fear of movement scaring the bird away or that they will spit out the call. Opening your mouth and dropping your jaw gives you that realism. But open mouth calling is clearer and more distinct. Birds respond with the mouth closed down. Hunters need to open their mouth when using a mouth call. It helps to copy the little soft subtleties turkeys do. One good way to learn how to mock a turkey is to use a CD of the birds and learn how to match your calling to their vocalizations. If done every two weeks it tends to prevent getting colds and sore throats from calling.Ī good call lasts you 3 or 4 years if you take care of it. Buy one of everyone’s call and try them all until you find the one that works for you. This results in differences in sound between two callers using the same call. In the woods, turkeys do make a lot of mistakes in their calls. ![]() But it is possible to do sound almost as good. There is no way a human can sound better than a hen turkey. There are so many subtleties in turkey communication that breaking down the call tells you what the hen is saying to the gobbler. If you are good at breaking it down then you are also capable of knowing what that sound means. A caller can break down the hen call note by note to perfectly imitate it.
